Perverted justice - set right through virtue

(Here's my speech at the 40 Days for Life opening rally in Ottawa on September 25th, 2011)

How long, Yahweh, am I to cry for help while you will not listen;
to cry, 'Violence!' in your ear while you will not save?
Why do you make me see wrong-doing,
why do you countenance oppression?
Plundering and violence confront me,
contention and discord flourish.
And so the law loses its grip
and justice never emerges,
since the wicked outwits the upright
and so justice comes out perverted. (Hab.1:1-4)
Justice did indeed come out perverted on September 9th, 2011 when a judge in Edmonton, Justice Joanne Veit, gave Katrina Effert a three-year suspended sentence for the killing of her newborn son in 2005.
Justice Veit based her decision on the fact that Canada has no abortion law. She states:
while many Canadians undoubtedly view abortion as a less than ideal solution to unprotected sex and unwanted pregnancy, they generally understand, accept and sympathize with the onerous demands pregnancy and childbirth exact from mothers, especially mothers without support.[1]
She added:
Naturally, Canadians are grieved by an infant’s death, especially at the hands of the infant’s mother, but Canadians also grieve for the mother.[1]
You can't really blame Justice Veit for thinking that Canadians are so accepting of abortion as to accept infanticide along with it. All she has to go on is the mantra of our political class and mainstream media that the debate on abortion is closed. I hope this will serve as a wake-up call for our politicians, particularly Stephen Harper.
Let. The. Debate. Take. Place.
We don't really know what Canadians want, for this debate has not yet been allowed to happen. Abortion is not a political football to be kicked around. To do nothing about this issue is to endorse the status quo - which is also to endorse infanticide.
Equating abortion to infanticide is nothing new for abortion proponents. In 1972, before Roe v. Wade, Michael Tooley, of Stanford University was already defending abortion AND infanticide.
In 1993, Peter Singer of Princeton University, an advocate for both abortion and infanticide, admitted that "the liberal search for a morally crucial dividing line between the newborn baby and the fetus has failed to yield any event or stage of development that can bear the weight of separating those with a right to life from those who lack such a right."[2]
Some feminist and pro-abortion thinkers have at least recognized the humanity of the unborn. In 1995, Naomi Wolf wrote:
So, what will it be: Wanted fetuses are charming, complex REM-dreaming little beings whose profile on the sonogram looks just like Daddy, but unwanted ones are mere "uterine material"? How can we charge that it is vile and repulsive for pro-lifers to brandish vile and repulsive images if the images are real?[3]
In 2008, author Camille Paglia stated:
...I have always frankly admitted that abortion is murder, the extermination of the powerless by the powerful. Liberals for the most part have shrunk from facing the ethical consequences of their embrace of abortion, which results in the annihilation of concrete individuals and not just clumps of insensate tissue.[4]
This reasoning, although quite lucid because it actually looks abortion in the eye without resorting to euphemisms, is appalling for its irrationnality. To advocate for the extermination of the powerless by the powerful is nothing other than what Dr. Bernard Nathanson called the Eclipse of Reason.
Faced with Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell's late-term abortions and infanticides, a case the media has called the "House of Horrors", some, such as Frances Kissling and William Saletan, have chosen to take a step back and to question the rightness of late-term abortions. This has earned them some stern rebukes from fellow abortion proponents such as Ann Furedi, CEO of The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (the primary abortion provider in the United Kingdom) who insists that "early and late abortions carry the same moral burden because (...) all abortions end a potential human life." [5]
I could go on quoting many other abortion proponents but time is short. Having nothing to go on but their own rationalizations of the indefensible, abortion proponents show a lack logical consistency. Each trying to worm his or her way around the truth. Truth must correspond to reality, and the reality is that modern medicine has confronted us with the undeniable reality of human life in the womb. The pathetic attempts by the pro-abortion crowd to discredit and censor displays of intra-uterine life and graphic abortion pictures are a testimony to the fact that we have the truth on OUR side, all they have is power. But power is a very fickle god and will trample you underfoot as soon as you've served your purpose. Truth endures.
The culture of death is indeed about power - the powerful sacrificing the powerless. In the case of abortion and infanticide, the sacrifice is a consummation of the ideology of sexual anarchy, which, by divorcing sex from its procreative power, leads to a kind of sexual bulimia of bingeing and purging.

How are we to undo this?

We know we have the truth on our side, but have we the virtue? This culture of death will only be overcome by self-sacrifice. Those of us who are strong and able must sacrifice ourselves for the most vulnerable.
The unborn need us. They need us to be their voices, to stand in their defense, to make real and immediate their humanity to those who would "exterminate" them and to the indifferent masses. The abortuaries, particularly, are where the innocent are being put to death. This is where we must go again and again, as long as the killing takes place.
May we not be found wanting in virtue.

What should be our attitude?

Firstly, we must go as embassadors of Christ, to extend His mercy to those enslaved in the culture of death. We must remove from our presence anything that would prevent those going to or working in the abortuary from experiencing in us the unconditional merciful love of God for them.
At the foot of the Cross of Christ, Mary, John and the others were not chatting or shouting or condemning, but were in prayer and fasting with love and compassion. Just as Jesus did not die alone, but was surrounded by prayer, may we surround the unborn with prayer, compassion and love in their final hours on this earth.
Secondly, we must be what Msgr Philip Reilly, founder of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants, calls sidewalk contemplatives. This quiet, peaceful presence at the abortuary is a radical departure from the idolatry of movement and expediency which drive the culture of death.
As sidewalk contemplatives, we sacrifice ourselves, we sacrifice our time, for what?
To be still.
We stop all activity in order to pray for those enslaved in the culture of death. We forego the next appointment, the phone calls, the texting, and stand still in the midst of the rush of the busy city.
In this stillness, we are also willing to suffer.
In this stillness, the wind will whip around us, the days will become cold and bleak, and even those enslaved by the culture of death will seem to ignore us.
Then will come the temptation to say to ourselves "Is this the best use of my time? Am I really being effective?"
These questions might have popped into the minds of Mary, John and Mary Magdalen as they followed Jesus up to Golgotha. Maybe they could have been more effective by going to the authorities to stop this madness. Maybe their time might have been better used in trying to gather some support to free Jesus.
Mary, John and Mary Magdalen knew better though. Following the example of Jesus embracing His Cross, they embraced their suffering, as we must on those difficult days praying at the abortuary, that modern day Golgotha. To be willing to suffer is to be willing to Love, and where Love is, death can have no victory.

The book of Habbakuk ends with:
But I shall rejoice in Yahweh,
I shall exult in God my Saviour.
Yahweh my Lord is my strength,
he will make my feet as light as a doe's,
and set my steps on the heights. (Hab. 3:18-19)

Our strength is in God our Saviour, not in politics, not in the media. Let us proclaim the truth in season and out of season. Let us also embody the truth of what love is. Love is to lay down one's life for others. Only on such virtue can a civilisation of love and a culture of life be built.

Msgr. Philip Reilly, the founder of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants explains our mission:

Such A Vision of the Street

More than twenty-five years ago Eileen Egan wrote a book about Mother Teresa of Calcutta entitled ‘Such a Vision of the Street.’ The words of the Title are taken from the English poet T.S. Eliot. The more complete quote is “Such a vision of the street as the street hardly understands.” Eileen Egan was making the point that many people see the Sisters of Mother Teresa’s Religious Order as good humanitarian or social workers reaching out to the unwanted and the outcaste of society. Mother Teresa, however, with the eyes of faith saw her Sisters as Jesus doing acts of kindness to Jesus hidden in the distressing disguise of the poor, the unwanted and the outcast. A totally different vision of the same experience.

The Street Hardly Understands

Today many a passerby, including some pro- life people, might view the Helpers outside of abortion clinics as simply pro-life protestors of legalized abortion, demonstrators or some people praying primarily to save the innocent, unwanted unborn infants whose lives on that very day are at risk of a violent death from the abortionist and the pro-choice, pro-abortion supporters. To view the Helpers simply as people on the pro-life side vs. the pro-abortion side, in a struggle primarily to save the unborn babies, would be hardly to understand the Helpers on the street. Only with the eyes of faith in the light of Golgotha or Calvary, can the scene on the street be properly understood.

Sidewalk Contemplatives at Calvary

The great mystery of Christianity is that the risen Christ intends to continue to do the work of His Father through you and me. He asks permission to live within us and through us to extend His mercy to those enslaved in the culture of death. The challenge of the Helpers is to be Sidewalk Contemplatives at Calvary. We must remove from our presence anything that would prevent those going to or working in the abortion ‘clinics’ from experiencing in us the unconditional merciful love of God for them. God gives us the power to love even our enemy. It is called the virtue of charity. Thus for the Helpers there is no longer two sides, pro-life vs. pro-abortion. There is only one side. We are commissioned by God to be faithful ambassadors of the merciful love of Christ to all those present at today’s Golgotha or Calvary. Even more important than being at the ‘clinic’ is how and why we are present there. At the foot of the Cross of Christ, Mary and John, Mary Magdalen and the other ladies were not talking and chatting or shouting and condemning but rather in prayer, fasting, love and compassion. Jesus did not die alone but was surrounded by prayer, compassion and love. So also the unborn in their final painful hours on earth should be surrounded with prayer, compassion and love. Moreover when the women come to the abortion mill and see people really praying, they are more likely to think of the presence of God and the Cross at Calvary. We must be convinced that God uses this type of Prayerful Presence to change hearts which then makes the sidewalk counselors attempt to speak to the women so much easier.

Amazing News!

This very encouraging message was sent to me by one of our stalwart prayers on Bank St.

On Wednesday, May 24th something very encouraging took place whilst I was praying and witnessing in front of the abortuary at 65 Bank St.

A gentleman who was with two women and a child, stopped to speak with me as they were walking by.
He smiled a huge smile and thanked me profusely for being there, saying (and I paraphrase because it was more than a week ago), "Thank you so much for being here! You are doing God's work, and lives are being saved. He said it over at least three times, and the ladies with him, (whom I found out were, one- his wife and two-a grandmother), smiled broadly and chimed, in agreement, with affirmative nods of conviction and gratitude.

To be sure I was overwhelmed and renewed by this kind action of theirs, and he was so exited to continue to share with me.

He then lifted up a beautiful little girl, high up in the air for me to see, and said, "She is alive because of what you are doing!!!" I asked him her name and commented what a beautiful little girl she was. He proudly responded that her name was Helen, and I shared a little something personal with him, telling him that was the name of my Mom who passed away, May 13th, 1996, God Bless and rest her soul.

My Mom who was Pro-life, (in fact she went ahead and had me at the age of 38...which was more dangerous back then, after been told by her doctor, that she may die, I may die or we both may die if she proceeded with giving birth to me because I was upside down in her womb...A breach birth. She said later when I arrived-( all 9and a half pounds of me, to her 89 lbs, soaking wet!, that I was the most beautiful, happiest baby she had ever seen). I believe that was because she chose to put my life ahead of hers, and did not even hesitate to think twice, about what to do when it came to choosing life over death or herself. I was Blessed with such a Mother!. Please know I speak of her because she also died on May 13th (The Feast of Fatima ) and she loved Our Blessed Mother, and this encounter happened on May 24th. May is the month of Mary, and rich in the abundance of her graces.

He told me Helen had been born, July 16th, 2009, and that on April 9th, 2009, someone had handed him a brochure, when he and his wife came out of the Morgentaler facility. I believe it was one of the sidewalk counselors, who must have handed it to him.

At this point we were fast becoming friends and I was eager, because of this exiting life-saving news, to continue to share coincidences with him and added again, that my Mom's birthday was July 18th, 1919. I did not mention that one of the children who I lost in a miscarriage after later marrying my husband late in life, is named Helen, and I had her baptized along with my other children, Teresa, who was the girl lost to abortion, and John and Michael from other miscarriages.

This gentleman and beaming proud Papa was so kind and loving, as were his whole family and he introduced me to his wife and the grandmother as well as letting me see Helen close up. What a gift. It was so clear, God wants us to know what we are doing is making a difference.

I wish I could remember his name, which I believe he told me, but I thanked him very much as well, for taking the time to stop and affirm Gods plan for life that we his humble servants are privileged to be a part of and can only say the one proper response when called to act and that is, Yes, Lord be it done to me according to your Word`The same words uttered by Our Blessed Virgin and Mother in Heaven and Co-Redemptress and Mediatrix of King Jesus Christ....Mary.

May we continue to pray and do what Our Lord asks through the Intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary.

Mother Teresa says offer ALL prayers to God through Mary.

We will be amazed.

Pray, pray and pray many Rosaries,, and fast, then pray and fast some more, witness always in love, and if possible at Cavalry as well, winter, Spring Summer and Fall, in season and out of season, in hot or cold, whether we are alone or with others, but continue to persevere, and NEVER, NEVER cease or give up till we see final victory over this giant, who can be slain,( and indeed will be.) (Remember David and Goliath)and we will continue to see more lives saved.

In Him
For Life

Frances W.

WOW! Considering all the hours that have been prayed on that sidewalk since the opening of that place, knowing that one child's life was saved makes it all worth it. We know there were others. Praise God!

This is why the Helpers keep going back there.
